when the hijacked plane went down in shanksville. vice president biden will visit that memorial site today. and a remembrance event will be held in new york city. the freedom tower is lit in red, white and blue. it is the first building of the complex which will eventually replace the old world trade center. nearby at the 9-11 memorial at ground zero, the reading of the names ceremony will get under way in a few hours and closer to home at the pentagon, they are getting ready to honor the lives lawsuit there. melanie alnwick has more from the pentagon. >> reporter: good morning. president obama and the first lady will observe a moment of silence on the south launch the white house and then they will take a helicopter here to the pentagon for a september 11th ceremony here as well. let's take you back to that day. american airlines flight 77 left dulles at 8:20 in the morning. it was supposed to go to last instead, five hijackers took over plane, turned it around and crashed no t. into the

pentagon at 9:37:00 a.m. killing the crew of sick and all 53 passengers as well as the hijackers. the plane hit the building on the first floor level. one section of the building collapsed. 125 workers here that day were also killed. the pentagon memorial was completed and open to the public in 2008, the seventh anniversary of the attacks. it is usually open around the clock but it will be closed this morning for the ceremonies marking september 11th with the president and the first lady. defense secretary leon panetta will be in charge of those ceremonies this morning. here is a look at how things are going to go. president obama will lay a wreath. we'll hear the national anthem. the army chief of chaplains will give an invocation. there will be a moment of sile ents at -- of silence at 9:37 in the morning. the president and first lady

will then go to walter reed naval medical center to visit with wounded warriors there. there are other ceremonies around the area marking the day as well including a prayer service at the washington national cathedral. >> thank you. new this morning, prince george's county police are investigating after a shooting in district heights. this happened around 1:30:00 a.m. along gateway boulevard mere the hemingway memorial ame church. we are still waiting on more details about the victim or victims in this. so far, no word on a suspect or motive at this time. >> d.c. police hope new surveillance video will lead to the arrest of a suspect accused of shooting a rite aid employee. this man walked into the rite aid on sunday night. he entered the store wearing a surgical mask and shot the assistant manager in both legs. this is the second time an employee at this particular rite aid in northeast has been shot. the first incident happened in april and that suspect has been arrested. a 17-year-old boy shot on

the first day of school in baltimore county woke up at home this morning after spending two week in the hospital. police say he was randomly hit when another student opened fire in the cafeteria. he has down's syndrome and said he was excited to play with his dog, make tacos and watch the ravens game last night. he says he would like to go back to school while his parments say they haven't looked that far ahead yet. tropical storm leslie gaining strength. where it is headed today. >> a bitter contract dispute still has chicago's public school teachers on strike this morning. what they are demanding before they head back to the classroom. that is coming up. i didn't knos where in season right now. shh's no no no no no no.. rosco ..no, no, no... ♪ opera

the teachers strike in chicago is again making headline today fotopoulos a second day, hundreds of thongs of parents are scrambling for a place to sunday their children. the teaers union and the school district failed to reach a settlement last night so it

is back to the picket line again. the big issues are performance evaluations and recall rights for laid-off teachers. >> congress is back to the work in the nation's capital but little ask is expected. lawmaker wanted to return to their districts to campaign for re-elect as soon as possible. house members could leave as early as friday and no later than next week. the senate is likely to have a shortened september schedule as well. both parties plan to take up issues related to our military veterans before leaving. tropical storm leslie is expected to make landfall in newfoundland. canadian officials are warning of possible flooding there and are predicting 12 hours of up tense rain which could lead to landslides in some areas. forecasters also say leslie is gaining trek as it moves over warm water. there is a big stink in parts of california. we'll tell you what prompted a flood of complaints involving rotten odors. >> nasty. >> upset resident in the district sounded off last night about the hefty prices that you pay in you are caught by a speed camera. more on their beef with police and city leaders when we come back. officials in southern california are trying to figure out what is causing a rotten egg smell. they say residents living across a 10,000 square mile radius started complaining about the odor yesterday. some officials think the foul smell may be coming from the salt in the sea. authorities say the recent storm may have churned the water and unleashed a bacteria from the sea floor. >> he was just there. >> let me just tell you. i smelled it. tiffs in southern california for a wedding, not my own. >> not yet. >> and it stunk. >> i was in southern california for a wedding, not my own. >> it was amazingly strong. i can't really describe it.

your north and west. dulles, 49 degrees. that is the coolest temperature at dulles since may 19th. you get the idea how chilly these temperatures are. probably a long sleeved shirt if you will be at the bus stop for a long period of time. it should be another beautiful affect with lots of sunshine expected. look at our satellite-radar. it works, but there is nothing going on. we'll be nice and dry for the next several days. as that area of high pressure starts to push farther east, our winds will shift and that will warm thins back up into the 80s around here for your day tomorrow. here is your forecast for today. lots of sunshine. just a beautiful afternoon. 79degrees is your daytime high. winds out of the north and east at five miles per hour. later tonight, 55 the overnight hoe. winds out of the south here and they will be shifting out of the south and that will allow the warmer air in tomorrow. we'll have cooler air in and enjoy the next couple of days. here is your seven-day forecast. we are warming up into the mid-

stocks snap a three-day winning streak and the economy is about to get a big boost thanks to the new iphone. lauren simonetti with fox business network is live in new york with the business beat. good morning to you, lauren. >> good morning. >> so what happened? what led to the snap of this three-day streak? >> uncertainty, uncertainty, uncertainty. a couple of key meeting this week in europe. will they approve the permanent bailout sphund? we're wondering about that. will the fed inject more money into the economy. we find out about that on thursday. -- will they approve the permanent bailout fund. the dow is off 52 points. the nasdaq droped a full percent. the iphone five about is to come out. a lot of people talk about it. it is owe so popular, it is strong enough to boost the

economy? >> you capt make this stuff up. but the j. p. morgan chief economist says the upcoming release of the iphone 5, miewpped you had t. has not even been announced yet, we are expecting that tomorrow, he says robust sales of the iphone 5 could boost gross domestic product up by about half a percent. -- you can't make it stuff up. he said he expects eight million of the new phones to be sold and he figured about $400 each. the phone retail for $600 and then you've got to figure $200 go for the imported parts. so at $400 each, he says that could boost the economy by more than $3 billion in the quarter. >> that is amazing that that little phone can do so much and i'm three phones behind. can you believe that? >> i'm five phones behind. i don't even have one. and apple hasn't even announced it. >> that is amazing.

let's talk about something else that i found interesting. about this volt. they are losing money on the volt car? >> yeah, this is a story about fuzzy math. essentially, rights are says that gm loses $49,000 for every chevy volt that it says. but general motors says not. reuters looked at the numbers inaccurately. they are looking at per vehicle but we are looking at it as the technology being used and we are investing in the technology for the lifeline of the entire volt category. so they say reuters got it wrong but still, the chevy volt is kind of like a political symbol for the bailout that general motors got. they said they have all this new electric technology and sales of the volt have certainly been disappointing. >> all right. you and i both have to get caught up on our phone situations. we are a little bit behind. >> we do. >> thank you very much for that report. always good to see you. a maryland democrat running for a congressional seat in the state drops out just two months before the election. we'll tell you why coming up.

details about the vic -- we are still waiting on more details about the victim or victims. montgomery county police are investigating how a toddler fell into i swimming pool and drowned. it happened at a home on sandy knoll drive in oln he want y yesterday. a nanny found the boy in the pool. a neighbor performed cpr you he later died at the hospital. police haven't decided whether to file charges. it has been two and a half weeks since a 17-year-old girl from kettering was killed in her home on chartsey street. police are still searching for a motive. last newt, hundreds of residents packed the community center to get an update on the murder of amber stanley. she was shot and killed after an armed man broke into her home. her mother hopes someone will step forward with information. >> we need help. we need the community to pull together and get this person or persons, whoever did this horrendous murder that killed

my baby, my baby girl. >> detectives are asking anyone who may have even or heard anything unusual on the night of august 22nd to contact the prince george's county tip line. police are all offering a $25,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest in this case. a travel insurance company is suing a maryland man who was once a suspect in the death of the travel companion in arube actual the lawsuit filed by an american express subsidiary seek to avoid a travel insurance policy that gary giordano took out in robyn gardner's name before their trip. he was arrested after gardner went missing in aruba last year. he was released due to lack of evidence. a democratic candidate for congress in maryland is dropping out of the race after the state party said she voted in two states. windy rosen says she is withdrawing from the first district congressional race. the 57-year-old is from miami but lives in cockeysville, maryland.

the maryland democratic party says she voted in both maryland and florida in the 2006 elections and in the 2008 presidential primarys. primary time now for the morning line. coming off a successful trip to nurleddens, the redskin get a break today. they will return to the practice field to get ready for their next opponent, the st. louis rams. the team is, however, dealing with some pretty serious injuries. safety jordan bernstein is out for the year with a severe right knee injury. he will be replaced by jordan pugh. nick sundberg suffered a broken arm in and spes game. there is no timetable for his return. and tomorrow, wide receiver pierre garcon will test his sore foot. he didn't expect to list a lot of playing time. the ravens at home taking on the bengals and joe flaco looks outstanding.

continuing our coverage of the 9-11 attacks on this 11th anniversary. besides all the events here in our area, there are ceremonies this morning at the site of ground zero as well. robert moses is live in new york city with with more on today's commemmorations. good morning, robert. >> reporter: good morning to you. good morning, everyone. the one major difference this year compared to fire chief years is that politicians have not been invited to speak at the ceremony so the voices that we hear today will be the voices of the loved ones of those who died 11 years ago. want to show you some of the precautions that have been taken here in lower manhattan. clearly, security is very tight even though this will be a more

muted fair today. you can see the barricades are up. many of the side streets here around ground zero are restricted to vehicle traffic and pedestrian traffic is also restricted. even though this will be a more laid back ceremony this year, many parts of the ceremony will be familiar. namely, the six moments of silence commemmorating when those flights crashed 11 years ago. also commemmorating the moments when the north and south towers fell here in lower manhattan. the family members of the victims of 9-11 will be the ones who will read the nearly 3,000 names of those who died on that day. i just want to show you where we're standing here. we are in the shadow of a imagine of thetic view. this is one world trade center behind me rising up. construction continues even as we mark this 11th anniversary. this is a majestic and meaningful view on any day but on a day like today, it seem to

into the mid- to upper 70s. just a nice time of year. let's kick off the forecast with a look at your numbers. startling. haven't gotten used to it yet. 57 now in washington. 60 in annapolis. that is the warm spot. look at all the 40s. 45 this morning in frederick. if it feels like it is a little cool, not your imagination. these temperatures running a good five, 10-degree below what would be considered normal for the 11th day of september. 51 in fredericksburg. quantico, got a report from you, 5 # degree. so again, comfortable temperature overnight. cool temperatures overnight. -- 55 degrees. high pressure parked just out to the west will keep things nice and dry for us. sunny and seasonable here for the next couple of days. we will start to warm things up a little bit as we get into our wednesday and thursday, middle of the week here as high pressure starts to push a little further to the east. here is what is happening. tropical storm leslie out of here off to the north and east.

i mean i'm talking like the '60s, early '70s. frequently, women were hired based on how good they looked. it wasn't anything more than that. i mean you have to have some skill but here is tucker and i. i'll go first. i'm the older one i do not have a degree in meteorology which is why, when i was doing the weather, for all those years, whenever somebody would refer to me as i ameteorologist, i would correct them and saw i am not a meteorologist. i was hired to do the weather many years ago. i've studied t but matthew, you are right. a lot of it was trial by fire. i don't have a degree in meteorology. so i have a degree in communication but i had to learn it but i am not a
